A few years ago, I discovered a beautiful river while overlanding in Idaho. This river is well known in the area, but completely unknown to nearly everyone else. The Lochsa River is almost entirely accessible from Highway 12 as it flows east to west through northern Idaho. It’s also known as the middle fork of the Clearwater River. There are many campgrounds along the river and its a very popular place to camp as you drive west toward Lewiston, Idaho. The water is extremely clear, so the fish can see you very well. The Selway River flows into this river near the middle of its length. The Selway is a National Wild and Scenic River.
The Lewis and Clark expedition followed this very river between 1804 and 1806. I will write another blog about following part of that trail in my Gladiator.
The bugs flying in the video are a smaller version of what is called willow flies in the southeast. I expected mosquitoes, but there were none. I’m not sure why.
J enjoys the river before dinner. We had clear skies for camping and the stars that night were magnificent. Our very favorite place to camp is on the bank of a noisy river. This is easily one of the most beautiful campsites we have ever stayed in.
The trees are very tall, but its open enough on the north side that Starlink will work well here. Now I have another yet another criteria for my perfect campsite. It needs to have enough open sky for Starlink and for the solar panel as well. I used to think I wasn’t picky, but I now realize I am exceedingly picky about campsites. The best ones are always free, but if that can’t happen, I still have a very long list to check.
